Salto KS Integration

Salto KS Integration

This is a technical guide for integrating the Salto KS access control system with LIKE MAGIC.

On this page, you will find an overview of the integration between Salto KS and LIKE MAGIC, including setup requirements, how guests access doors and how to handle common issues.

info

How LIKE MAGIC connects to Salto KS. LIKE MAGIC issues tags, PINs and remote-open commands against your Salto KS site. Lock and access events (for example a lock going offline, or the battery and offline alerts described below) come back automatically and in near real time, which is what lets LIKE MAGIC raise the alert tasks in the Troubleshooting section without any manual checking.

1. Salto KS Subscription

Please check with your partner to see which subscription was purchased.

The advantages of the Pro Subscription:

  • Support for the Do Not Disturb button on the door (if available)
  • Alerting via task management when doors or IQs are offline
  • Battery monitoring for locks: proactive alerts when battery levels are low

⚠️ If no Pro subscription has been purchased, these features cannot be activated. An upgrade is possible at any time via the respective Salto Partner.

2. Requirements & Setup

In order for Salto KS to be set up correctly with LIKE MAGIC, our team requires admin access in Salto KS.

Please send the invitation to the Salto KS user and assign admin rights to our user.

User: magic+primary@likemagic.tech

Installation: Please note that we can only get started once all doors and IQs have been installed and are online.

IQ network requirements: Each IQ needs a stable network connection, either via Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz), Ethernet or PoE (Power over Ethernet). A reliable connection between the IQ and the Salto cloud is essential for remote door opening and real-time status updates.

3. Encoder IDs

An encoder is any Salto KS-connected device that can read a tag: for example, a door lock or a wall reader. Each encoder has a unique ID that identifies which device is used to encode guest RFID tags.

Make a note of the encoder IDs so that you can add them yourself later in the door settings.

4. Changes

If your company makes any changes to the Salto infrastructure, we must be informed. The reason for this is that we set up our system with your Salto system when you first connect. This applies to changes such as:

  • new Door Locks
  • new IQs
  • and other changes connected to the Salto Infrastructure

Once you notify us via a Support Ticket, we adjust our setup so that the change is supported and all your guests keep access to their rooms as usual.

5. Conclusion

With the correct subscription, a complete setup of all doors and IQs, and the required admin access granted, Salto KS can be connected to LIKE MAGIC.

Please ensure that all encoder IDs are documented and that LIKE MAGIC is set up as an admin user in Salto KS. Both are required to complete the integration and to support it during operation.

6. How It Works

The Salto KS integration connects your property's door locks to the cloud through small wireless hubs called IQs. Each IQ communicates with nearby locks and relays commands between LIKE MAGIC and your Salto infrastructure. LIKE MAGIC manages guest access automatically. No manual intervention is needed for standard guest operations.

Lock types in plain language:

  • Room doors (private): Only the assigned guest can open their room door. Access is granted at check-in and revoked at check-out.
  • Common areas (public): Lobby entrances, corridors, elevators, fitness rooms and similar spaces. All checked-in guests can access these doors.
  • In-house areas: Shared spaces available only while the guest is currently in-house (checked in and not yet checked out), such as spa or pool areas.
  • Service-based access: Tied to purchased services. For example, a guest who books parking receives access to the garage door.

7. Guest Access Methods

LIKE MAGIC supports three methods for guests to open doors with Salto KS:

🏷️ RFID Tag

A physical card or key fob, encoded at check-in using any Salto KS-connected device (a door lock or a wall reader). LIKE MAGIC automatically enables offline mode on every tag. Once the tag is distributed while the system is online, it continues to work even if the installation goes offline afterward.

🔢 PIN Code

A numeric code shared with the guest via guest communication (e.g., email or web app). The same offline behavior applies. The system must be online to distribute the PIN, but once the guest has it, the PIN works even if the installation goes offline. The guest enters the PIN followed by # on the lock keypad.

⚠️ PIN codes are only available if your property has been set up with PIN support. Request it via a Support Ticket.

📱 Remote Door Opening

Guests can open doors directly from the LIKE MAGIC web app: no Salto mobile app needed. The guest taps a button in the web app and the door unlocks remotely. This method requires the door lock to be online (connected to its IQ and the cloud) at the moment of opening.

Guest lifecycle:

  1. Check-in → Guest receives access to their room, common areas and any service-based doors
  2. During stay → Guest opens doors using tags, PINs or remote opening
  3. Check-out → Private room access is revoked immediately; common area access remains briefly for departure
  4. After departure → All access is fully revoked

8. Emergency Tags

In case of a complete network or internet outage, the standard remote door opening will not work. While RFID tags and PINs continue to function offline (if distributed beforehand), new guests arriving during the outage cannot receive access through normal means.

We recommend preparing emergency tags:

  • Create a pre-encoded emergency tag for every private door lock during initial setup
  • Store these tags in a secure, easily accessible location (e.g., the front desk safe)
  • Emergency tags allow staff to grant room access manually when the system is entirely offline

⚠️ Emergency tags are a last resort for complete outages. Under normal circumstances, LIKE MAGIC handles all access automatically.

9. Troubleshooting

🔴 Lock or IQ offline

When a lock or IQ goes offline, LIKE MAGIC automatically creates an alert task (Pro subscription required). An offline lock means guests cannot use remote door opening for that lock, but RFID tags and PINs continue to work if they were already distributed.

  • Check that the IQ has a stable network connection (Wi-Fi, Ethernet or PoE)
  • Verify the IQ has power. Check the LED indicator on the device
  • If the IQ was recently rebooted, allow a few minutes for locks to reconnect

🔑 Guest cannot open a door

  1. Check if the lock is online: An offline lock only works with tags or PINs, not remote opening
  2. Verify the guest's access method: Does the guest have a valid tag, PIN or is the web app available?
  3. Confirm check-in is complete: Access is only granted after the check-in process finishes
  4. Check Do Not Disturb: If another guest activated the DND button from inside the room, the door cannot be opened from outside (Pro subscription feature)

⚠️ Battery alerts

Door locks run on batteries and need periodic replacement. With a Pro subscription, LIKE MAGIC monitors battery levels and creates alert tasks when levels are low. When you receive a battery alert, coordinate with your maintenance team or Salto Partner to replace the batteries promptly.

✍️ When to open a Support Ticket

Open a Support Ticket when:

  • A lock or IQ stays offline after checking power and network connections
  • Multiple guests report access issues for the same door
  • You see repeated automated alert tasks for the same device
  • You need to make changes to your Salto infrastructure (new locks, new IQs, door reassignments)
  • You want to enable features like PIN support or Do Not Disturb
